BBQ maintenance: Get your grill in top shape for summer

There’s nothing like firing up the BBQ again as the weather starts to warm up.

But before you get grilling, it’s important to give your BBQ a little TLC to ensure it’s in top shape for  BBQ season. Here are some simple maintenance tips to keep your gas BBQ performing at its best.

Give it a deep clean

Over time, grease and food particles can build up, affecting its performance (and possibly the flavour of your food).

Start by removing the grill plates, burners, and drip trays, and give everything a good scrub with warm soapy water. For tougher spots, use a BBQ cleaning brush to remove burnt-on residue.

Check for rust

Rust can sneak up on you, especially if your BBQ hasn’t been used for a while. Inspect the grills, plates, and burners for any signs of rust. If you spot any, scrub it off with steel wool or a wire brush, and apply a light coat of cooking oil to prevent further corrosion.

Inspect the burners

The burners are the heart of your BBQ, so make sure they’re clean and free of blockages. Check for any debris or grease build-up and clean them with a soft brush. If the flames are uneven or low, it might be time to replace the burners.

Replace worn-out parts

Although BBQs are built to last, some parts may wear out over time. Keep an eye on things like the grill plates, burners, and ignition systems, and replace any parts that are showing signs of wear and tear.

Cover it up

Invest in a good BBQ cover to protect your grill from the elements. A cover will keep it clean and protect it from moisture, extending the life of your BBQ. Just make sure it’s fully cooled down before covering.
