FAQs

Will there be gas after 2025?
Yes, the flame isn’t going out! We'll continue to deliver gas to existing homes and businesses past 2025, it won't be "switched off". Over 430,000 NZ homes and businesses use reliable and affordable gas energy.
In its final recommendations to government, the Climate Change Commission did not propose a ban on new gas connections from 2025, but recommends a date is set, once a national energy strategy has been developed for New Zealand and the role gas energy will play in the future is determined.
2025 does not mean the end for existing gas customers. Gas energy has a bright future.
-
What will happen to customers gas connections?Right now things remain the same. We will continue to connect homes to natural gas and deliver gas energy to existing homes and businesses. Gas won’t be “switched off” in 2025.
Natural gas will continue to be delivered to connected consumers until we’ve fully moved to new low and zero carbon gases, likely to be by 2050. We envisage that future gases such as green hydrogen gas, biogas and bioLPG will start being introduced or blended with existing gases in the next 3-5 years.
Kiwi gas users can be confident that the gas they turn on isn’t being turned off and will continue to flow well into the future. -
What does the Climate Change Commission report mean for gas?
The Climate Change Commission has not proposed a ban on new gas connections from 2025 but instead recommend the government sets a date, once a national energy strategy is developed and there is more clarity around the contribution future gases can make in decarbonising New Zealand’s energy supply.
Gas energy is an important part of New Zealand’s energy future. The Climate Change Commission’s advice to the government on achieving our climate and carbon emissions targets acknowledges the role that zero carbon gases can play in decarbonising New Zealand’s energy system and reducing the impact of climate change on our environment.
New gases are the future. If you like today’s gas, you’ll love tomorrow’s. With future gases like renewable hydrogen gas, biogas and bioLPG already being developed and trialed here in New Zealand and globally, Kiwis will continue to enjoy gas energy in their lives.
As we decarbonise the energy sector, these new gas energies will help us achieve our 100% renewable energy aspirations and a net-zero carbon future by 2050.

Is gas still a good choice for Kiwi homes?
The living is easy in a gas home. The comfort, control, reliability and convenience of fast, powerful hot water, home heating and cooking make gas the natural choice for around 430,000 Kiwi homes and businesses.
Gas is still a great choice because there are low and zero emission gases like hydrogen and biogas on the horizon. These new clean energy technologies are being trialled locally now.
Did you know around 90% of our gas network (and 100% of new subdivisions!) are ready now to distribute these zero carbon gas energies like hydrogen and biogas? Current gas appliances can likely take blends of these new gases now too.
The flame isn’t going out. Kiwi gas users can be confident that the gas they turn on isn’t being turned off and will continue to flow well into the future.
-
Is gas running out?
Current gas reserves show there is plenty of natural gas available to power Kiwi homes, so it is not running out. Over 430,000 NZ homes and businesses use reliable and affordable gas energy.
We will continue to deliver gas to existing homes and businesses past 2025, the flame isn’t going out.
-
How much gas does the residential gas market use each year?
Collectively, New Zealand homes use 6.8 petajoules (PJ) of gas each year. That’s around 3.6% of the total yearly gas use around the country.
Kiwi homes (directly using gas energy) produce less than 1% of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
-
What does the future hold for gas?
New renewable, low and zero carbon gases are the future. With If you like today’s gas, you’ll love tomorrow’s. With future gases like renewable hydrogen gas, and biogas and bioLPG already being developed and trialled here in New Zealand and globally, Kiwis will continue to enjoy the benefits of gas energy in their lives as we move to tomorrow’s gas energy.
-
What is biogas and biomethane?Biogas is created naturally and emitted into the environment when organic materials such as food waste, landfills and wastewater break down. Biogas is captured in anaerobic digestors and then carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and water are removed which creates biomethane – a gas that can be used to energise our homes.
Biomethane sometimes referred to as renewable natural gas, is upgraded biogas. Once contaminants are removed from biogas, biomethane is created and can be used in place of natural gas. -
Is there enough biogas to replace natural gas usage? It’s estimated that 23.5PJ of biogas could be captured annually from wastewater, landfill and agricultural waste around New Zealand. Currently Kiwi homes connected to natural gas use 6.8 petajoules (PJ) of gas per year.
-
When will biomethane be available?Future gases, like renewable hydrogen gas, and biomethane (biogas) and bioLPG, are already being developed and trialled here in New Zealand and around the world. We’re aiming to blend biomethane in parts of the Powerco gas network by 2030.
-
Will current gas appliances work with biomethane?Yes! New appliances you buy today will generally last 15 years.
If you currently own a modern appliance that uses natural gas, you can have confidence that you’ll be able to use it for its expected lifetime (typically up to 15 years). Most modern gas appliances are already compatible with future gases and able to run on a blend of natural gas and renewable hydrogen gas (up to 20%) or biogas. Blending gases will be an important part of our journey as we scale up to zero carbon gas energy and new compatible appliances will become widely available.
Join our gasfitter directory
We know that choosing a gasfitter is an important step for anyone connecting to gas. While we don’t directly recommend individual gasfitters, we do provide a regional listing on our website to help customers find qualified professionals in their area.
If you're a gasfitter working in one of our gas regions, you're welcome to apply to be included on this page.
How to apply
Simply fill out the form with your business details. We’ll review your application and be in touch once your listing is live.
To be eligible for listing, you must:
- Be a current Master Plumbers member
- Work in at least one of our gas network regions
- Have a professional online presence (e.g. website or social media page)
- Maintain a positive reputation – we may take into account Facebook and Google reviews when reviewing your application.
